Holistic Horse Issue 110
Holistic Horse was founded more than 20 years ago on the notion that horse owners and their animals deserve to explore the integrative remedies available, not only for themselves and their families but also for their horses, animals and pets. We are constantly encouraged when we cross paths with like-minded individuals, practitioners and organizations outside of our publishing world that are using integrative therapies and remedies and readily sharing ideas and practical solutions. We encourage our readers to reach out to us with your experiences with integrative medicines. In this issue, we take a look at how to choose bit fits for you and your horse; help for the head-shy horse; and spotting facial tension and knowing the differences in your horse.

Summer is here and with it comes the fun and joy our equine partners bring us. At Holistic Horse, it’s probably our favorite season as the northeastern weather finally mellows and offers up its sunshine, greenery and natural glory. It’s the season we get to spend the most time with our horses and a great time to brush up on your skills with the many horsemanship clinics offered during the season. In this issue, check out the benefits of bareback riding; how our veterans are gaining new skills and and a new vocation with Arabian horses; learn about Ayurveda and equine health; and the dangers, symptoms and treatment of anhidrosis. Our Hoof Care section looks at equine canker and how to treat and heal this stubborn infection.

We featured an article on the importance of quality of our horses’ drinking water entitled, “How Safe Is Your Horse’s Water?” It’s a subject we hold close to our hearts. In February 2017, the American Horse Council (AHC) of which Holistic Horse Media is a member, sent out a press release, “Trump Administration to Rollback Clean Water Act Rule.” The 2015 rule, “Waters of the U.S.” (WOTUS), was originally opposed by the AHC and other agricultural groups, a position we admittedly were unaware of or did not pay attention to at the time.

For most of us, the health and wellbeing of you and your horses are priority. At Holistic Horse, we are always encouraged to learn how professionals in our field are working together to fuse the best of holistic and conventional medicine to care for our horses. In this issue, we look at related topics such as: the safety of drinking water; free-choice forage for the laminitis horses; how moisture can affect your horse’s hooves; yoga for the rider; herbal support for seasonal mares; benefits of turmeric for your horse; how fluoride can be damaging to your health; and the hidden benefits of colostrum and iron overload in horses. We also have a special commentary on holistic and conventional veterinary medicine working together to solve horse health issues.

Horses are often improperly diagnosed during a lameness evaluation. Treatment often includes invasive treatments of the lower extremities. In this issue, we look closely at the horse’s neck as the agitator — which is far too often missed. We also look at the causes of coughing; essential oils to support our horses’ nerves and bones; and sprouted seeds to add to your horse’s diet. Our Herb Blurb section looks at the benefits of the nourishing oat. We also look at how topical iodine can be harmful.
